Smith.ai pricing explained: what a call really costs once you add booking, follow-up and recording
Smith.ai's receptionist plans are priced per call, and the add-ons are priced per call too. Here is the arithmetic from the live pricing page, where third-party estimates diverge, and what the bill measures.
Short answer
Smith.ai's Starter receptionist plan is $300 for 30 calls, or $10.00 a call, with overage at $11.50 (smith.ai/pricing, 1 Oct 2026). Adding appointment booking ($1.50), text and email follow-up ($0.50) and recording ($0.25) brings each call to $12.25, so 30 calls cost $367.50 a month, or $4,410 a year. Smith.ai says it is month to month; billing runs to the end of the current cycle. You pay per call, whether or not it books.

The symptom is a bill larger than the plan. Smith.ai's Starter receptionist plan reads as $300 for 30 calls, and owners budget $300. A third-party pricing guide reports that "Real monthly totals typically run 30 to 60 percent above the advertised plan price for businesses using standard add-ons."3 That figure is an estimate, not a measurement. The mechanism behind it can be reproduced from Smith.ai's own pricing page, and that is what this piece does.
Every number below comes from smith.ai/pricing as fetched on 1 October 2026 unless a different source is cited.1 Prices change; re-run the arithmetic against the live page before you sign.
What Smith.ai's receptionist plans cost per call#
Smith.ai's human receptionist plans are metered per call, with a fixed bundle each month and a higher per-call rate above it. The bundle price divided by the bundle size gives the base unit cost.1
| Plan | Calls included | Monthly price | Unit cost per included call | Overage per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 30 | $300 | $10.00 | $11.50 |
| Basic | 90 | $810 | $9.00 | $10.50 |
| Pro | 300 | $2,100 | $7.00 | $8.50 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | n/a | n/a |
Two billing rules shape the meter. Spam is excluded: "You won't be charged for spam or unsolicited sales calls," provided forwarded lines pass caller ID verification.1 Everything else that a person dials counts as a call, including short ones. A G2 reviewer of the receptionist service noted in October 2019: "Many of my calls are short and smith.ai charges per call."5
The add-on stack: how $10 becomes $12.25 or more#
Smith.ai's add-ons are priced per call, so they scale with the same meter as the plan. The pricing page lists fourteen per-call add-ons and three per-month ones.1 The three in this article's title are the ones most owners who want bookings will consider.
| Add-on | Price | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Book appointments | $1.50 | per call |
| Text & email follow-up | $0.50 | per call |
| Call recording & transcription | $0.25 | per call |
| SMS/Slack notifications; Microsoft Teams notifications; conflict checks; accept collect calls | $0.50 each | per call |
| Dedicated Spanish line; accept payments; third-party intake; custom calendaring | $1.00 each | per call |
| Complex call routing; extended intake | $1.50 each | per call |
| Custom extended intake | $0.25 | per question |
| Business caller ID for outbound | $10.00 | per month |
| Additional transfer destinations | $15.00 | per month |
| Inbound call tracking numbers | $5.00 | per month |
Booking, follow-up and recording together add $2.25 to every call. On Starter that moves the unit cost from $10.00 to $12.25, a 22.5% increase. At 30 calls the month comes to $367.50; over twelve months, $4,410.
Third-party figures do not match this exactly, and the difference is worth naming. fast.io wrote in June 2026 that add-ons move the Starter cost "from $9.75 to $12.50 per call, a 28% increase."2 Its $9.75 base does not match the $10.00 on the live page, so its starting point differs from ours. ServiceAgent gives a full-stack example of $487.50 a month for 30 calls.3 On the current page, that total implies $6.25 of add-ons per call, which would need intake or routing add-ons on top of the three above. We could not reproduce either vendor's exact mix, so treat both as directional.
Three things that are not driving the bill#
Three plausible explanations for a higher bill turn out not to be the main driver once the page is read closely.
Hypothesis 1: spam calls are inflating volume#
Spam is the first suspect and usually the wrong one. The page excludes spam and unsolicited sales calls when caller ID verification passes.1 If your bill counts robocalls, the fix is the verification setting, not the plan.
Hypothesis 2: a long contract is locking in the price#
A long contract is not the mechanism either. Smith.ai's page says: "Smith is a month-to-month service," and cancellation runs "through the end of the current monthly billing cycle." It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, capped at $1,000 with overages excluded.1 Third parties report something stricter: ServiceAgent describes a "30-day notice required via email" and a recurring complaint of charges continuing after closure.3 One Trustpilot reviewer wrote in October 2023: "Company continues to bill us even though our service was canceled. We were promised refunds, but this never happened."4 That is one review from 2023, not a pattern we can measure. Read your own agreement, cancel in writing, and keep the confirmation.
Hypothesis 3: the overage rate is the problem#
The overage rate matters less than plan choice. Starter plus overage costs $300 + $11.50 × (calls − 30). That stays below Basic's $810 until about 74 calls a month (30 + 510 ÷ 11.50 = 74.3). Basic plus overage stays below Pro's $2,100 until about 212 calls (90 + 1,290 ÷ 10.50 = 212.9). Add-ons are the same per call on every plan, so they do not move these break-evens. Below those volumes, staying on the smaller plan and paying overage is cheaper.
Root cause: the meter counts calls, not outcomes#
The root cause is the unit of billing. Every line on the invoice is a count of inbound events: calls answered, calls booked, calls recorded. None of them is a count of jobs won. A call from an existing client asking for an address costs the same $10.00 as a new lead ready to book.
The add-ons follow the same rule. "Text & email follow-up" is listed as $0.50 per call.1 The pricing page does not describe it as a sequence that continues until the caller books or is marked lost. Read it as a charge for a follow-up action on a call, and ask Smith.ai exactly what is sent, how many times, and when it stops.
Booking is the step that matters most on the phone. Invoca's 2026 home-services benchmarks found 55% of businesses never ask the caller to book.9 A booking add-on addresses that directly. It also meters it: you pay $1.50 on each call where booking is enabled. A Trustpilot reviewer wrote in April 2023 that "Receptionists do not read instructions," citing calls booked as "telephone consults without offering in-person or virtual options." Booking quality depends on instructions being followed.4
Smith.ai's AI receptionist: conflicting price reports#
Smith.ai's AI receptionist pricing could not be confirmed from the page we fetched, and third-party reports disagree with each other. fast.io lists $95 a month with per-call overage tiers of $2.40, $2.30 and $2.10.2 CloudTalk describes a free tier of 25 calls with $3.00 overage and Pro plans of $150 to $500 at about $2.00 to $1.67 a call.7 SchedulingKit lists "$9.75-11 per call beyond plan limit."8 These cannot all describe the same offer at the same time.
G2 reviews of the AI tier describe the handoff edge. A law practice wrote in August 2026: "At times it will not transfer the calls to the office." An owner wrote in October 2025 that the AI would collect details, then transfer, and staff "would ask for all the same info again."6 If you price the AI tier, also price what a failed transfer costs.
The calculator: your monthly Smith.ai cost#
The calculator below reproduces the bill from the pricing page. Fill in your monthly call count and the add-ons you will switch on.
INPUTS
N = calls per month (excluding verified spam)
A = per-call add-ons you will use, summed
booking 1.50 + follow-up 0.50 + recording 0.25 = 2.25
M = per-month add-ons (caller ID 10, transfer destinations 15,
tracking numbers 5)
PLAN COST (pick the lowest for your N)
Starter = 300 + 11.50 x max(0, N - 30)
Basic = 810 + 10.50 x max(0, N - 90)
Pro = 2100 + 8.50 x max(0, N - 300)
Break-evens: Starter to Basic at about 74 calls; Basic to Pro at about 212
MONTHLY TOTAL = plan cost + (A x N) + M
WORKED EXAMPLES (A = 2.25, M = 0)
N = 30 -> 300 + 67.50 = 367.50 (12.25 per call)
N = 40 -> 300 + 115 + 90.00 = 505.00 (12.63 per call)
N = 90 -> 810 + 202.50 = 1,012.50 (11.25 per call)
COST PER BOOKING = monthly total / bookings won
Example: 30 calls, 6 bookings -> 367.50 / 6 = 61.25
30 calls, 3 bookings -> 367.50 / 3 = 122.50
The booking counts in the last lines are an illustration, not a benchmark. Use your own. For context on the alternative, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median receptionist wage at $18.27 an hour, or $38,010 a year, before benefits.10 Our cost-per-answered-lead comparison applies the same per-outcome thinking to marketplaces.
Trade-offs and residual risk#
Per-call pricing has a real advantage: the cost is predictable per unit, and a person answers the phone. For a business whose leads arrive by phone and need a human voice, that may be worth the meter. The residual risks are in three places: add-ons switched on and forgotten, plan size chosen above the break-even, and the gap between "a call was answered" and "a job was booked."
The last one is the one the invoice cannot show. If you want to see what happens to written inquiries after the first reply, our piece on why the follow-up is where leads die covers it.
Where Valet fits#
Valet does not answer phone calls; it covers written inquiries. You forward your inquiry address to Valet, and it answers email, website contact forms, listing lead emails and requests on your free Valet page, only from your own facts and calendar. It offers real times, holds them, books, and sends two useful follow-ups at most by default under the Valet follow-up cap. Money, complaints and contracts go to you with one-tap replies, and each reply has a Valet receipt. The billing unit is different: during early access, a small monthly base plus a fee only for bookings or quotes Valet wins, capped monthly, month to month. The free lead check looks at 10 to 20 recent inquiries and shows what went unanswered or stopped after one reply.
