Meta's Business Agent: what it answers (DMs), what it doesn't (email, forms, marketplace leads), and what happens after it hands off

Meta's agent can now answer the DMs on a small business's phone. It does not see the email inbox, the website form or the marketplace lead, and when it passes a chat to a person, it goes quiet.

Short answer

Meta's Business Agent, launched globally on 3 June 2026, answers customer questions, recommends products, books appointments and qualifies leads in WhatsApp Business and Instagram DMs (TechCrunch). It does not answer email, website forms or marketplace lead emails. Developer docs from 360dialog state that once it hands a chat to a human, "it stops answering that chat" and loses earlier context on hand-back. TechCrunch reports it is charged through WhatsApp Business Premium tiers; we could not confirm a free version.

Meta's Business Agent answers the messages that arrive inside WhatsApp Business and Instagram DMs, and nothing outside them. Since its global launch on 3 June 2026 it can "answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and reroute queries to a person if needed"1. It does not see your email, your website form or the lead emails from The Knot, Thumbtack or Bark. And by its developer documentation, once it hands a chat to a person, "it stops answering that chat"2.

A Tuesday evening, three inboxes#

The gap is easiest to see from where the owner stands. What follows is an illustration, not a real business.

Illustration
Customer on WhatsApp · Tue 21:12Hi, do you do wedding flowers for 18 October? About 80 guests. What would a bridal bouquet and 8 centrepieces cost?
Business agent · Tue 21:12Thanks for reaching out. Let me connect you with someone from the team who can help with that.
Chat handed to a person. The agent stops answering this chat. No reply time given.
Same customer, by email to hello@ · Tue 21:40Sorry, sent this on WhatsApp too. Just checking you got it. We're deciding this week.
Email inbox: no agent. Next look: Thursday morning.

For example, a florist who does wedding work alongside a shop counter closes at six. The cold room hums. The buckets are rinsed and stacked by the back door, and the phone sits face down on the workbench next to a roll of florist's tape. Between six and nine she does the books, and the phone buzzes twice. One buzz is WhatsApp. The other is an email notification from a wedding directory, a third inquiry that arrived in a different place.

In this illustration the agent did its job by its own rules. A price question for a custom order is the kind of thing a sensible agent passes to a person. What it could not do is say when the person would reply, see the email the same customer sent half an hour later, or chase either message on Thursday.

What does Meta's Business Agent answer?#

Meta's Business Agent answers chats inside Meta's own messaging apps. TechCrunch's launch report lists what it can do: "answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and reroute queries to a person if needed"1. It became "available globally within WhatsApp" and works within Instagram DMs, after Meta "spent nearly two years testing AI agents in WhatsApp Business for customer support in countries like India and Mexico"1.

The same report says Meta is testing "daily briefings of chats that occurred overnight" for some accounts across WhatsApp Business, Instagram, Messenger and Meta Business Suite1. That is a summary for the owner. It is not a reply to the customer.

On price, the record is thinner than the talk around it. TechCrunch reported that Meta plans to charge through the WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, and that large businesses will pay by the tokens they use1. We have seen the agent described as free. We could not confirm a free version, so check Meta's current terms for your account before you plan around a zero.

What does Meta's Business Agent not cover?#

Meta's Business Agent does not cover any inquiry that arrives outside WhatsApp or Instagram. Neither TechCrunch's launch report nor the 360dialog documentation mentions an email channel12. That leaves out four places where small businesses get written inquiries:

  • Email to info@, hello@ or bookings@. The oldest channel, and still where quotes, contracts and long questions land.
  • Website contact forms. They arrive as email. Leadferno's 2024 test of 225 small-business forms found 42.6% got no reply at all12.
  • Marketplace and directory lead emails. The Knot, WeddingWire, Thumbtack, Bark and Angi notify by their own apps and emails, outside Meta.
  • Google Business Profile messages. Google is piloting its own AI agent there for some US businesses, separately from Meta11.

Customers do not sort themselves by channel to suit the business. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found that after reading reviews, 54% go to the business's website, 24% to its social media and 20% contact the business directly8. A business with a DM agent and a website form is covering one of those paths with software and the other with whoever opens the inbox.

What happens after Meta's Business Agent hands off to a human?#

After Meta's Business Agent hands a chat to a person, it goes silent in that chat and waits. 360dialog, a WhatsApp business solution provider, lists this among the agent's known limitations: "Once the agent hands off to a human, it stops answering that chat"2. When the person hands the chat back, "the agent loses earlier conversation context"2.

Three more lines on the same page shape what the customer sees. The handoff notice is a fixed message, the same for every customer and every language. The agent "doesn't always reply in the customer's language". And proactive outbound messages, the kind a follow-up needs, require the agent to be holding the conversation thread at the time2. Read together, these mean that once a chat is handed off, any reply-by time, any chase and any follow-up depend on a person.

None of this is a defect by Meta's design. A handoff is supposed to put a person in charge. The risk sits in the gap between "a person is in charge" and "a person has replied". Customers describe that gap in their own words. On the Jobber Community in August 2026, a member said four cleaning companies using AI intake lost his business because responses took five weeks or more, or never came. His line: "The quickest way for me to not do business with a company is the utilization of ai for customer facing interactions."3 Another member answered that if customers "felt ignored or couldn't reach a real person, it defeats the purpose"3.

Couples writing to wedding vendors said the same thing years before any of these agents existed. "I automatically ruled out any vendors that don't respond," one wrote on WeddingWire's forums in January 2018. Another: "It's been 4-5 weeks since I initially messaged them"4. The silence is old. The new part is that a bot now opens the conversation before the silence starts.

How often do handoffs go quiet?#

Handoffs go quiet often enough that two separate datasets measured it. Pied Piper's 2025 Service Telephone study of 2,105 dealerships and 200 independents found 56% of AI-to-human transfers failed6. Gorgias, analysing its merchants' AI-handled support tickets from October 2025 to April 2026, found about a third of tickets handed off to humans never got a human reply7. Neither study covers Meta's agent or a small service business. Both describe the same seam.

Most customers are not against AI itself. Five9's 2025 survey of 1,006 consumers found 72% are open to AI if they can escalate to a person5. The condition is in the second half of the sentence. An escalation that ends in a fixed message and no time is the version customers say they will leave over. Our longer account of what a working handoff has to promise is in what "never stuck with a bot" has to mean.

The bottom three rows are where the expensive inquiries tend to arrive: a wedding, a renovation, a retainer. They are also the rows with nobody in the second column. A broader version of this map, across more platforms, is in our post on why the first reply is now free and the follow-up is where leads die, and Google's agent is covered in what "Handled by your AI agent" means.

What changes for the owner, and what does not#

What changes with Meta's agent is the first two minutes of a DM. A customer who writes at 21:12 gets an answer at 21:12, and for a question about opening hours or whether the shop delivers, that answer may be all they needed. That is a real improvement for a business that lives on WhatsApp, and it costs the owner nothing in attention.

What does not change is everything after a question the agent cannot settle: the custom quote, the date check, the deposit, the complaint. Those still land on a person, now with a fixed handoff message in front of them and no promise of when. The email from the same customer still sits in another inbox. On Thursday morning the florist in the illustration has two threads from one couple, in two places, neither of them answered.

The honest ending is that no single platform is going to fix this, because each one answers the channel it owns. Meta answers Meta's apps. Google answers Google's listing. Thumbtack answers Thumbtack. The inbox the business owns is the one nobody else has a reason to answer.

Where Valet fits#

Valet covers the rows Meta's agent does not. It answers email, website forms, marketplace and directory lead emails, and requests on your free Valet page, from your own price list, packages, calendar and policies. Use Meta's agent for DMs and Valet for the rest. When a question needs you (money, a complaint, a contract, a deposit), Valet hands it over with one-tap replies and tells the customer when you will reply. The inquiry keeps its state, a next step and a time, and Valet follows up twice with something useful before it stops and tells you why. Every reply is signed as your assistant and says it is AI. To see what is landing outside your DMs, start with the free lead check: forward 10 to 20 recent inquiries and see which went unanswered and what they were worth.

Questions people ask

What does Meta's Business Agent do?

According to TechCrunch's launch report, it can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads and reroute queries to a person. It works inside WhatsApp Business and Instagram DMs.

Does Meta's Business Agent answer emails?

No email channel is mentioned in TechCrunch's launch report or in the 360dialog documentation we reviewed. Email, website contact forms and marketplace lead notifications sit outside Meta's apps, so the agent does not see them.

What happens after Meta's Business Agent hands off to a human?

360dialog's documentation says that once the agent hands off to a human, it stops answering that chat, and that on hand-back it loses earlier conversation context. The handoff message is fixed, so the customer is not told a specific reply time unless a person tells them.

Is Meta's Business Agent free?

We could not confirm a free version. TechCrunch reported in June 2026 that Meta plans to charge through WhatsApp Business Premium subscription tiers, with large businesses paying by the tokens they use. Check Meta's current pricing for your account.

Should a small business use Meta's Business Agent?

It can make sense for a business whose customers mostly write on WhatsApp or Instagram, as long as someone owns the chats it hands off. It does not cover inquiries that arrive by email, website form or marketplace, so those need their own plan.
