Google's Business Profile AI agent: what "Handled by your AI agent" and "Needs your attention" mean
Messaging came back to some Google Business Profiles in June 2026, with an AI agent answering first. Here is what the two message tabs mean, what the agent reads, and what is still left for you.

Short answer
Since late June 2026, Google has been piloting an AI agent inside Google Business Profile messages for some US businesses. Messages it answers land under "Handled by your AI agent"; ones it passes to you land under "Needs your attention", and a "Customer handoff" setting notifies you when that happens. It is an unstable, undocumented pilot (Partoo, Sep 2026). The agent gives a first reply; follow-up, booking and the hard cases still sit with you.

Status as of 1 Oct 2026. Google's AI agent in Business Profile messages is a pilot. It has been reported only in the US, it has appeared and disappeared on dashboards, and Google has published no official documentation for it. The latest public update we found is Partoo's revision of 9 Sep 2026. Names, tabs and settings below may change or vanish. We will update this page when they do.
Google is testing an AI agent that answers customer messages on your Google Business Profile. In plain English, it sorts your messages into two piles. "Handled by your AI agent" holds the ones it answered itself. "Needs your attention" holds the ones it passed to you. A "Customer handoff" switch tells you when a message lands in your pile.2 The pilot was first reported in late June 2026 and is US-only.13 The agent can give a first reply. Following up, booking and the hard questions are still yours.
What is Google's Business Profile AI agent?#
Google's Business Profile AI agent is a test feature that replies to people who message your business from Google. You probably came here because you saw a new Messages button on your dashboard, or a client asked you about it. You want to know two things: what is it saying to my customers, and what do I have to do?
Think of it like a receptionist Google placed at your front desk without asking you much. It reads what it can find about you, answers the easy questions, and leaves notes on your desk for the rest. The catch is that nobody gave you the receptionist's training manual. Google has not published one.2
Local SEO consultant Muhammad Hussain reported it first, and Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable confirmed it on 26 June 2026.13 Partoo also credits Darren Shaw with spotting it.2 A thread in r/localseo titled "Google is bringing back GBP Messaging - with an AI chatbot for your business" drew 20+ comments around July 2026.
How did Google Business Profile messaging get here?#
Google Business Profile messaging has been switched off, replaced, and partly switched back on in two years. The timeline matters because many owners still believe "Google has no inbox." That stopped being fully true in 2026.
| Date | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Jul 2024 | Customers with active chats were notified that chat was ending. | Google Help4 |
| 31 Jul 2024 | Google removed chat, call history, chat FAQ and quote requests from Business Profiles. | Google Help4 |
| 22 Jan 2025 | WhatsApp and SMS links rolled out on US profiles. At launch they showed on mobile browser search only, SMS threw errors, and there were no analytics. | Near Media, 4 Feb 20255 |
| Late Jun 2026 | A Messages section with an AI agent appeared on some US dashboards, then disappeared within hours. | Search Engine Roundtable, 26 Jun 2026; Silverfox Digital, 2 Jul 202631 |
| 16 Jul / 9 Sep 2026 | Partoo described the tabs, settings and Customer handoff toggle, and noted the pilot is US-only and unstable. | Partoo2 |
The 2025 WhatsApp and SMS links were a phone number, not an inbox. A message went to your pocket, and nothing answered it for you. The 2026 pilot is the first time since 2024 that Google has hosted the conversation itself, with something replying first.
What do "Handled by your AI agent" and "Needs your attention" mean?#
The Messages area in the pilot has four tabs: Messages, Insights, Settings and Promote.1 Inside Messages, every conversation goes into one of two lists. Picture a mail sorter with two trays.
"Handled by your AI agent": the tray Google answered#
"Handled by your AI agent" holds conversations the agent replied to without you. You can read them. You cannot, as far as anyone has reported, see why the agent chose a given answer or which page it took it from.2 When Silverfox Digital looked, both trays were empty, which suggests very early testing.1
"Needs your attention": the tray Google left for you#
"Needs your attention" holds conversations the agent decided to pass on. In plain English, it is a to-do list. A message sits there until you open it and reply. Nothing in the reported pilot replies on your behalf after the handoff, sets a deadline, or follows up if the customer goes quiet.
The Customer handoff toggle: the doorbell#
The Customer handoff setting is a switch in Settings. When it is on, Google notifies you when the agent decides to pass a conversation to you.2 Think of it as a doorbell. It tells you someone is waiting. It does not answer the door. Settings also hold a welcome message, conversation starters and your logo. Partoo reports no tone controls.2
Promote and Insights#
Partoo reports that Promote will let a Google Ads click open straight into a chat with the agent.2 Insights is listed as a tab, but no one has published what it measures yet.
Where does Google's AI agent get its answers?#
Google has not said where its Business Profile AI agent gets its answers. Partoo lists the data sources as unknown, and it found no stated way for you to correct a wrong answer.2 The working assumption among people who track Google's local products is that the agent reads your Business Profile fields and your website. Silverfox Digital's advice follows from that: complete your profile, check your FAQ answers, and make your website and profile say the same thing.1
Here is why that matters. If your profile says you open at 8 and your website says 9, the agent has two answers and no way to ask you which is right. It is like giving a new hire two price lists and leaving for the weekend. Whatever it picks, the customer reads it as your answer.
Silverfox Digital suggests the agent could answer questions about hours, location and services, confirm service areas, steer people toward booking or a quote, collect contact details and flag complex questions.1 Read that list as a prediction, not a feature list. Silverfox framed it as what the agent could "realistically" do.
What can't Google's Business Profile AI agent do?#
Google's Business Profile AI agent has clear limits in every public report so far. Some are missing features. Others are simply not documented, which for your business works out the same way.
- No documentation. Google has not published how the pilot works.2
- No way to correct answers. No stated method to fix a wrong reply, and no tone controls.2
- US only, and unstable. It has appeared and vanished within hours on some dashboards.12
- No reported booking from your calendar. No report shows it holding a real time on your calendar or sending an invite.
- No reported follow-up. No report shows it nudging a customer who went quiet.
- No reported reply-by time. Nothing tells the customer when you will answer a message it handed to you.
- Only one channel. It answers Google messages. Your email, website form and marketplace leads are untouched.
The last point is easy to miss. The agent covers one door of your business. Email and your website form are other doors, and it does not watch them.
Where the simple explanation of Google's agent stops being true#
The simple explanation of Google's Business Profile AI agent has four boundary conditions. Check them before you plan around it.
- You may not have it. The pilot is US-only and appears on some dashboards, not all.2
- It may change next week. Tab names, settings and the handoff switch are not documented, so any of them can change without notice.
- Other Google AI is separate. Google's automated calls to businesses on a customer's behalf are a different product with their own settings. This page covers messages only.
- Your WhatsApp or SMS link may still be live. The 2025 links and the 2026 pilot are separate. Check which ones your profile shows.5
What happens to the "Needs your attention" pile?#
The "Needs your attention" pile behaves like any queue with no timeout: it waits for you. If you reply the same day, it works. If you reply on Monday, the customer has already messaged someone else. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 19% expect a same-day reply from a local business, up from 6% a year earlier.6
Owners have a measured track record with to-do piles like this, and it is not good. Leadferno tested 225 small-business contact forms in 2024. 42.6% got no reply at all, and the average first human reply took 17 hours 49 minutes.7 A 2026 Pied Piper study of 3,211 home-services inquiries found 72% got no follow-up.8 In e-commerce, Gorgias found that one-third of tickets an AI handed to a human never got a human reply.9
So the first reply is now free from Google. The handoff is where the thread breaks. Customers accept AI when a person is reachable: Five9 found 72% are open to AI interactions "provided they can escalate to a human when needed."10 A tray that fills up over the weekend is not that.
Illustration A worked example. Say a florist gets 10 conversations a month in "Needs your attention": wedding quotes, a delivery outside the usual area, a complaint about a late order. If she clears the tray on Monday mornings, a Friday-evening quote request waits about 60 hours. If 3 of those 10 would have booked at $400 each with a same-day reply, a weekly clear-out puts up to $1,200 a month at risk. Your numbers will differ; the point is to count the tray, not guess.
The messages most likely to land in the pile are the ones worth the most: custom quotes, money questions, complaints and anything outside the facts Google can read. We have not seen published data on what the pilot passes on, so check your own tray for a month and sort it.
Checklist: get your listing answer-ready, and who handles what#
An answer-ready Google Business Profile gives any AI agent, Google's or anyone else's, one consistent set of facts to read. Work through the checklist once, then again every time a price or policy changes.
- Hours: regular, holiday and special hours match on your profile and website.
- Services: every service you sell is listed, with a short plain description.
- Prices: starting prices or ranges on the profile and a pricing page on your website, or a clear line saying how quotes work.
- Service area: towns or postcodes you cover, and what happens just outside them.
- Booking: one clear way to book or request a time, with the link on your profile.
- Policies: deposits, cancellations, refunds and lead times written in one place on your website.
- FAQ: the ten questions you answer most, answered on your website in your own words.
- Contact: the email and phone on your profile are watched every day, including weekends.
- Consistency: profile and website say the same thing; remove old pages that say otherwise.
- Dashboard check: once a week, look for a Messages section; if it is there, read both trays and turn on Customer handoff.
- Reply-by rule: decide how fast you answer anything in "Needs your attention" (for example, same day before 18:00) and who covers weekends.
- Re-check date: put a monthly reminder to re-read this page's status line, since the pilot may change.
| Job | Google's Business Profile agent (pilot) | You | An inquiry assistant such as Valet |
|---|---|---|---|
| First reply to a Google message | Yes, from what it can read | Only for "Needs your attention" | No; Valet does not read Google Business Profile messages |
| First reply to email, website forms, marketplace lead emails | No | Yes, unless you hand it off | Yes, from your own facts |
| Correcting a wrong answer | No stated method | Fix profile and website facts | "Correct this" on each reply |
| Offering and holding a real time | Not reported | Yes | Yes, from your calendar |
| Follow-up if the customer goes quiet | Not reported | If you remember | Up to two useful follow-ups by default, then it tells you |
| Money, complaints, contracts | Passes to you, per reports | Yes | Goes to you with one-tap replies; customer told when you'll reply |
| A record of what was said and why | Not documented | Your memory | A receipt per reply: question, rule, sources |

Where Valet fits#
Valet does not plug into Google Business Profile messages. It covers the doors Google's agent does not: email, website contact forms, listing and marketplace lead emails, and requests on your free Valet page. It answers only from your own facts and never invents a price or policy. It offers real times from your calendar, and it follows up at most twice by default under the Valet follow-up cap. Money, complaints and contracts go to you, and the customer is told when you will reply. Each inquiry moves through the Valet Inquiry States, and each reply comes with a Valet receipt and says it is AI. To see what is slipping today, try the free lead check: forward 10–20 recent inquiries and see which went unanswered and what they were worth.
Questions people ask
What does "Handled by your AI agent" mean in Google Business Profile?
It is the list of customer messages that Google's AI agent answered on its own in the Business Profile Messages pilot. You can read them, but Google has not documented how the agent chose its answers.
What does "Needs your attention" mean in Google Business Profile messages?
It is the list of messages the AI agent passed to you instead of answering. With the Customer handoff setting on, Google notifies you when a conversation moves there. Nothing in the pilot replies on your behalf after that point.
Is Google Business Profile chat back?
Partly, as a pilot. Google removed Business Profile chat on 31 July 2024. A Messages section with an AI agent appeared on some US dashboards from late June 2026, but it has come and gone, and Google has published no documentation for it as of 1 October 2026.
Where does Google's Business Profile AI agent get its answers?
Google has not said. Observers assume it draws on your Business Profile and website, so the safest step is to make those two sources complete and consistent.
Can I correct a wrong answer from Google's AI agent?
Partoo's coverage reports no stated way to correct the agent's answers and no tone controls. The practical fix is to correct the underlying facts on your profile and website.
