Gorgias vs Zendesk for a small store: what each costs at 300 and 1,000 orders a month, and what both leave on your desk
Two worked monthly bills, at 300 and 1,000 orders, from list prices read on 1 October 2026. Then the column neither pricing page has: the tickets that still land on you.
Short answer
For a small store, Gorgias is usually cheaper. At 300 orders a month (about 66 tickets) with AI resolving 45%, Gorgias comes to roughly $46–77 a month and Zendesk Suite Team to $92.50–119, from list prices read on 1 October 2026. At 1,000 orders the gap widens to about $139–177 against $196–257. Both still hand most AI-touched tickets back to a person: 55% at the median Gorgias brand.

For a small store, Gorgias usually costs less than Zendesk. At 300 orders a month, about 66 tickets, with AI resolving 45% of them, we worked Gorgias out at roughly $46 to $77 a month and Zendesk Suite Team at $92.50 to $119, from list prices read on 1 October 2026124. At 1,000 orders the gap widens. The difference comes from one design choice: Gorgias prices by ticket volume, Zendesk prices by agent seat.
The bill is the smaller part of the decision. In Gorgias's own platform data, 55% of AI-touched tickets ended with a person6. Whichever tool you pick, that person is probably you. This article shows both bills, then the column the pricing pages leave out.
Gorgias vs Zendesk: how each one charges#
Gorgias and Zendesk both bill a base subscription plus a fee for each conversation their AI resolves. They differ in what the base is tied to.
Zendesk charges per agent. Suite Team is $55 per agent per month billed annually, or $69 billed monthly; Suite Professional is $115 or $149. Suite Team includes 5 automated resolutions per agent per month, and Professional includes 10. Each extra automated resolution costs $1.50 on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk says you "pay only for customer requests that were successfully resolved by the AI agent, without any escalation to a human agent"1.
Gorgias charges per ticket tier and says its helpdesk is "never priced per agent"3. Gorgias's own plan table did not render when we read it, so the tiers below come from G2's listing, read the same day: Starter $10 for 50 tickets plus $0.40 per extra ticket; Basic $50 for 300 tickets plus $40 per extra 100; Pro $300 for 2,000 tickets2. Treat them as a guide and check the live table. Its AI Agent costs "$0.90 per resolved interaction" on most plans and $1.00 on starter plans. Plans include between 90 and 2,500 or more automated interactions a month, and overage runs $1.00 to $2.00 per interaction on monthly support-only plans, $0.83 to $1.67 on annual ones, and $1.50 on Support + Shopping Assistant plans4.
That last figure explains a number you may have seen in reviews. A Trustpilot reviewer wrote in July 2026 of paying "1.50 USD per AI conversation"9. On Gorgias's own page, $1.50 is the overage rate on one family of plans4.
What Gorgias and Zendesk cost at 300 orders a month#
The 300-order store in this example sells apparel. Gorgias's March 2026 data puts apparel at about 22 tickets per 100 orders5, so the store sees about 66 tickets a month. We assume AI resolves 45% of them, the median rate Gorgias measured across its brands6. That is 30 AI resolutions and 36 tickets for a person.
| Option | Base | AI fees | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorgias Starter | $10 + 16 extra tickets × $0.40 = $16.40 | 30 × $1.00 = $30 | $46.40 |
| Gorgias Basic | $50 (300 tickets) | 30 × $0.90 = $27 | $77 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, 1 agent, annual + committed | $55 | 25 extra × $1.50 = $37.50 | $92.50 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, 1 agent, monthly + pay-as-you-go | $69 | 25 extra × $2.00 = $50 | $119 |
Valet arithmetic from Zendesk's pricing page1, G2's Gorgias plan listing2 and Gorgias's AI Agent pricing page4. Assumes every conversation counts as a ticket and no included AI block; if your Gorgias plan includes automated interactions, its AI line falls.
At this size, Gorgias Starter is about half the cost of Zendesk's cheapest AI configuration. The Basic tier costs more than Starter but leaves headroom to 300 tickets, which matters in the month a shipment is late.
What Gorgias and Zendesk cost at 1,000 orders a month#
At 1,000 orders, the same apparel store sees about 220 tickets. AI resolves 99 of them at the 45% median, and 121 go to a person. Here the pricing models start to pull apart, because 121 human tickets a month is enough work that many owners add a second person.
| Option | Base | AI fees | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorgias Starter | $10 + 170 × $0.40 = $78 | 99 × $1.00 = $99 | $177 |
| Gorgias Basic | $50 (300 tickets) | 99 × $0.90 = $89.10 | $139.10 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, 1 agent | $55–69 | 94 extra × $1.50–2.00 = $141–188 | $196–257 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, 2 agents | $110–138 | 89 extra × $1.50–2.00 = $133.50–178 | $243.50–316 |
Same sources and assumptions as the 300-order table. The second Gorgias user costs nothing extra on Gorgias's per-ticket model; on Zendesk, it is another seat.
The second agent is where the models diverge most. On Gorgias, a part-time helper adds headcount but not subscription cost. On Zendesk, every extra person is a seat. For a store planning to hire, that is a burn-rate line to model now, not discover on the first invoice.
What both leave on your desk#
Both Gorgias and Zendesk bill only for conversations the AI closes without a person. Neither bill shows what happens to the rest, and the rest is the larger share of the work.
Gorgias's Ecom Lab measured it across accounts with 200 or more AI-touched tickets, October 2025 to April 2026: 55% of AI-touched tickets ended in a human handoff, the median wait after handoff was 10 hours, the 90th percentile was 71 hours, and one-third of handed-off tickets never received a human reply. Abandonment after handoff was 42% for contact forms, 30% for email and 13% for chat6. Zendesk publishes no comparable figure that we found, so we apply Gorgias's rates to both.

Prices: zendesk.com, G2 and gorgias.com, read 1 October 2026. Handoff rates: Gorgias Ecom Lab, Oct 2025–Apr 2026. Abandoned count shown at 300 / 1,000 orders where two figures appear.
The question in the last row is not idle. A small-business reviewer on G2 wrote in September 2026 of a "lack of clarity in billing, what qualifies as a billable ticket"7. On the Zendesk side, a thread in r/ecommerce (20+ comments, about August 2026) asking about both tools' AI agents includes the line "Zendesk is becoming too expensive for our company." Neither comment proves a pattern. Both say: read the billing unit before the price.
The principle: choose on what still lands on you#
The spreadsheet that picks between Gorgias and Zendesk compares two monthly totals, and on that basis Gorgias wins at small volume. The unforced error is treating the total as the cost. At 300 orders, the gap between the two bills is about $30 to $70 a month. The 36 tickets each tool hands back are worth more than that in your time alone. Gorgias's 2023 estimate put a human-handled ticket at about $12.188, which makes 36 tickets roughly $438 a month.
So the operating principle is this: for a store of one to three people, choose the tool by what still lands on you, and only then by price. That means three questions:
- How many tickets come back to a person? Ask the vendor for your own projected handoff rate, not its best customer's resolution rate.
- What does the customer hear when they do? A handoff that tells the customer when a person will reply is a different event from one that goes quiet for 10 hours.
- What does moving cost you? Both tools are helpdesks. You move support@ into them and build rules and saved replies before the AI is useful. That is several evenings for an owner, and nobody bills it.
For many one-person stores, the honest answer to the third question is that a helpdesk solves a team-coordination problem they do not have yet. What they need is the inbox answered from their own policies and the remaining questions handed back with a time.
How we applied this at Valet#
We built Valet so that nothing has to migrate. You forward support@ or hello@ to a private Valet address from Gmail, Outlook, iCloud or any host, and replies go out from your own address once the domain is verified. We made that choice because the setup line in the table above is the cost owners most often leave out.
We also chose to send money and complaints to the owner by default, with one-tap replies, and to tell the customer when the owner will reply. That raises the number of questions that reach you. We accept the trade because a held question with a stated time costs less than a refund nobody approved.
The trade-off we have not solved is volume. A store at 1,000 orders with a part-time helper may want a shared queue, assignment and reporting, which are helpdesk features. Valet is not a helpdesk, and at that size Gorgias or Zendesk may be the right call. The question we cannot yet answer with data is where that line sits for small stores. Valet could measure it from free lead checks, by counting how many forwarded threads need the owner and how long they wait. We have not published that figure.
Where Valet fits#
Valet is a small business's own AI assistant for written inquiries. It answers email and contact forms from the facts you write down, such as shipping times, the returns window and sizing notes, and anything not on your list waits for you. Every inquiry has a state and a next step under the Valet Inquiry States, follow-ups stop at two by default, and every reply carries a Valet receipt and says it is AI.
If you want to see how many of your own support threads end with no reply before you pick a helpdesk, the free lead check takes 10–20 recent inquiries and shows what went unanswered, what stopped after one reply, and what it was worth. For the per-order arithmetic behind these bills, see what customer support costs a small store per order; for how vendors define a resolution, see what counts as an AI resolution.
Questions people ask
Is Gorgias or Zendesk cheaper for a small Shopify store?
At list prices read on 1 October 2026, Gorgias is cheaper at small volumes because it prices by ticket tier rather than per agent. At 300 orders a month we worked it out at about $46–77 for Gorgias and $92.50–119 for Zendesk Suite Team with one agent, AI included.
How does Gorgias pricing work?
Gorgias prices its helpdesk by monthly ticket volume, not by agent, and charges $0.90 per AI-resolved interaction on most plans ($1.00 on starter plans). Plans include a block of automated interactions, and overage rates run from $0.83 to $2.00 depending on plan and billing. Check the live table before you buy.
How does Zendesk charge for AI resolutions?
Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent per month billed annually ($69 monthly) and includes 5 automated resolutions per agent. Extra automated resolutions cost $1.50 on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, according to its pricing page on 1 October 2026.
Do I need a helpdesk for a one-person store?
Not always. A helpdesk organises tickets for a team. A one-person store may get more from having routine questions answered from its own policies and the rest handed back with a time the customer is told, without moving support@ into a new tool.
